SAOL is a new indie band and the latest project by Zoë Gough, who formerly featured in Dublin band, Dreaming of Jupiter. They have released two singles to date this year and I have been listening a lot. They're both really good! The first single called, Fool's Gold, is as good a debut single as you'll find anywhere. It's a song that's very easy on the ear and I can't help thinking it would be great as part of a movie montage or scripted music video. It carries a nostalgic vibe for me and reminds me of the 90's indie songs I used to listen to as an awkward teen. I like the Irish quality to the vocal also, in what is a really well arranged song. The vocal harmonies really hit home and the tones selected for the guitars and outro lead licks are all just spot on. The drumming is exceptional on this song and definitely worth a mention. It's as smooth as it gets.
Skeletons is the latest single from SAOL and it's a much more heavier and grungy offering. It's fuckin' awesome. Gough starts off with all the snarl of Hole over ringing atmospheric notes. It doesn't take the song long to up its energy levels before getting to a fantastic chorus hook. It's the pause that makes it and I love the fuzzy, grungy bass and moody guitar solo. In the words of Zoë,
“Skeletons explores dealing with feelings of depletion and fear following the end of a relationship. Specifically the symptoms of social anxiety that often come with this. Essentially, I had a relationship with someone I really loved, and it got pretty fucked up. We all go back to a place in our minds from time to time and reel with anxiety when we think about things that happened there right? Skeletons invites the listener into my little reeling world. I hope it makes your head spin as much as it does mine. It’s an awful pang, but there’s an element of catharsis that comes with it!”
SAOL have come out of the blocks with two really strong tracks and I will definitely be keeping a close watch. I look forward to hearing what comes next and would highly recommend that you check them out!
